It was formed late in 2002 when Waveren and Welgegund – two farm portions of the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen – were purchased and combined to create a unique location for this progressive winery. Two months later a fire swept through the valley, destroying a portion of Saronsberg’s vineyards and convincing all involved that initial plans to delay the construction of a cellar should be reconsidered. Winemaker Dewaldt Heyns was appointed in early 2003 to guide the construction of a brand new cellar complex made up of a cutting-edge fermentation cellar, a rustic maturation cellar and a truly avant-garde tasting room. This centrepiece of Saronsberg’s operation was completed in December 2003, a matter of weeks before 25 January 2004, the day the maiden vintage began with the harvest of Saronsberg’s first Sauvignon Blanc.

Those grapes became an award-winning wine, starting a trend of continuous critical and awards success that has seen Saronsberg grow into one of the brightest stars in the South African wine industry. This consistency of excellence undoubtedly contributed to Dewaldt’s recent appointment to the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild – an honour he regards as a personal privilege, as well as a testament to the dedicated efforts of Saronsberg’s cellar and vineyard teams.

His name was to be enshrined in local wine lore. For in 1927 Theuniskraal was bought by the Jordaan family, specifically for winemaking. In 1948, Andries Jordaan launched the estate's first Riesling – and a South African icon was born. Just two years later Theuniskraal Riesling took gold at the Commonwealth Wine Show against international competition. Andries' sons, Kobus and Rennie continued the tradition of fine Riesling, extending plantings with other classic varieties, both white and red. Today their sons Andries and Wagner carry on the family’s hands-on quality approach to winemaking.

Henk took early retirement from IBM and Anita sold her consulting company to pursue a dream of making a living out of their passion: wine. They spent most of 2000 driving thousands of kilometers through the Cape Winelands, and walked through dozens of pristine (and neglected) vineyards and wine cellars. In the paradise of stunning views, the Tulbagh valley simply stood out for them. They completely fell in love with the rustic atmosphere and unbelievable scenery.

What today is Blue Crane Vineyards came on the market as a subdivision just at the right time. On their first visit to the farm, they disturbed a pair of nesting Blue Cranes …. a clear sign in their minds, hence the name. It is a magnificent location with stunning views of the Witzenberg, Winterhoek and Saronsberg mountains. Soil testing revealed sought after Glen Rosa soils on south facing slopes, ideal for what they wanted to achieve.
