The town, named after the Roman goddess of fruitfulness, is the centre of one of the most important deciduous fruit producing areas in the Western Cape, South Africa.

The area is a mere 150 km or 90 minutes drive from Cape Town. The Ceres valley can be reached through Michell’s Pass (from Cape Town, via N1, R43, R46), Theronsberg Pass (from Touws River, R46) and Gydo Pass (from Citrusdal, R303).

The Ceres district consists of three diverse areas and each has its own unique charm and landscapes: The ‘Warm Bokkeveld’ is a wide fertile valley and is the centre of one of the richest agricultural regions of the Western Cape.  9 km north of Ceres, at the foot of the Gydo Pass, is Prince Alfred’s Hamlet – the hub of the potato and onion packing industry. Bo-Swaarmoed , east of Ceres, is famous for its cherry picking in season, snow during winter, proteas, and breathtaking panoramic views of the valley. The ‘Koue Bokkeveld’ is a mountainous area situated on a plateau and can be reached on the R303 from Ceres via the Gydo Pass and from the N7 via Citrusdal.  This is a fruit (apple and pear) and vegetable producing area, with the small village of Op-die-Berg in the centre.
